About the Blog
I’ve got three points to make about this blog series.
The first, and this probably won’t come as a surprise, is that I love Turku. Olen turkulainen (which is what you say when you want to impress the locals)! I left a lot behind when I abandoned the UK but, at the risk of sounding like a Disney movie, I’ve discovered a whole new world since landing in this special corner of Finland.
Secondly, in my younger days I did a bit of globetrotting. Returning home I couldn’t wait to develop my pictures to show alongside my amazing stories. I was aghast to realise my pictures were all of things (buildings, mountains, vistas etc), and not the wonderful people I’d shared my experiences with. My advice to any traveler is to share what you do with as many people as you can. For my part I will try to highlight some of the majestic souls who call this region home. I will also try to drag someone along with me wherever I go to add as much local context as I can muster.
Thirdly, full disclosure – this blog has been commissioned (by Visit Turku), so please excuse the shameless promotion of the fantastic establishments of the region. Actually, that’s one thing I can never over-sell. Those who know anything about Finnish culture know that they are humble to a fault – literally! So no need to worry about any bias (honestly ;D ).
In this blog I hope you find not only useful information and insights of which you weren’t aware, but also some interesting stories that you might like to share. Please enjoy and feel free to message me with any tips or questions you might have.
About the Writer
Andrew Scholfield – I am a copywriter, journalist and entrepreneur running an English language consultancy called Othello Consulting. Hailing originally from the UK, I settled here nearly 7 years ago and have never looked back (except when the cricket is on). Finland, and Turku offers everything I could want (except for good Fish ‘n’ Chips – comments box if you have any good recommendations?). If I could sum up Finland in one word it would be ‘Contrast’. I won’t say any more than that. Those who live here will understand and those who have yet to discover, keep reading the blog, or better yet jump on a plane, hop on a ferry and treat yourself to some northern exposure!
